It would not be an exaggeration to say that motherhood has taken Spanish-language literature by storm so far in the 21st century. From being relatively marginal, if not invisible, characters, mothers have come to occupy a place in Latin American literature without moral, psychological, social, and even aesthetic boundaries. With increasing insistence, from poetry to essays, from chronicles to memoirs, theater, and especially fiction, authors from all walks of life in the language make their motherhood a dominant literary theme, one that shuns with studied disdain the placid shelves of childcare and self-help to claim its right of admission on the chaotic shelves of contemporary literature.

About the Author

María Julia Rossi is the author of Fictions of Emancipation: Literary Servants in the Work of Silvina Ocampo, Elena Garro, and Clarice Lispector (2020) and Silvina Ocampo Marginal (2024). She co-edited the Epistolario de José Bianco (2018) and the essay collection Los de abajo: Three Centuries of Servants in Latin American Art and Literature (2018). She studied Literature and Theater in Rosario and earned her doctorate in Latin American Literature in Pittsburgh. She is currently a professor at John Jay College (CUNY) in New York.

No sería exagerado afirmar que la maternidad ha tomado por asalto a la literatura en español en lo que va del siglo XXI. Sobre la autora

María Julia Rossi es autora de Ficciones de emancipación. Sirvientes literarios en la obra de Silvina Ocampo, Elena Garro y Clarice Lispector (2020) y Silvina Ocampo marginal (2024). Coeditó el Epistolario de José Bianco (2018) y el volumen de ensayos Los de abajo . Tres siglos de sirvientes en el arte y la literatura latinoamericanos (2018). Estudió Letras y Teatro en Rosario y se doctoró en Literatura Latinoamericana en Pittsburgh. Actualmente es profesora en John Jay College (CUNY) en Nueva York.
